Chemistry in Action - Videos for help
Below are links to videos that might help with each Lesson of the Notes Package. Remember with these you can skip ahead, pause, or replay to get the most out of them!
Lesson 1: Review of the Atomic Model
Flinn At-Home Science Lab
Flinn Scientific has made some Lab videos to watch from home. There are student worksheets that go along with them, but don't worry about that. If you're interested, here are the links:
Lesson 1: Review of the Atomic Model
- For an intro on how to find the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDnNB18whC0
- For how to find the number of p, n, and e, plus an brief intro on ions - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWEoz0khqEc
- **Don't forget there are helpful links below on the Atomic Model!
- For Bohr Diagrams - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4dfgCfLNE8
- For Electron Dot Diagrams (Note: Lewis Dot Structures are the same thing) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sk7W2VgbhOg
- Great visual on how ions form: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4IoMrlths0
- Great introduction to ionic bonding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf07-8Jhhpc
- This is a quick review on how ionic bond form, how to write their formulas, and how to name them. Again, it does go very in depth, even into things we do not cover. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKo72RnN37E
- Here is an overall review. From atomic structure to why atoms form bonds. It also compares ionic and covalent bonds. It's s slightly longer video (12 min) but it is full of a lot of information. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSc491HLzDo
- This video uses some terminology that we did not cover (the type of shells that are full) however it does a good job of showing how elements share electrons in these bonds, as well as how to draw the electron dot form. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlgKp4FUV6I
- Here is a video that goes over the difference between ionic and covalent compounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKA4CZwbZWU
- This video goes over writing formulas for ionic compounds. If you get it after one example, don't feel the need to watch the whole thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URc75hoKGLY&t=87s
- This video goes over naming ionic compounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWE4LYkG3po
- This video goes over how to write names for covalent compounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DejkvR4pvRw
- This video quickly goes over both the naming and formula writing for covalent compounds. It goes quick, so feel free to pause when needed! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpIEkL6cFN8
- Here is an in depth look into balancing equations. It is a little long (15 min) but it does a great job of showing all the work needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNsVaUCzvLA&t=242s
- Here is a shorter video (9 min). It goes quicker but still shows how to do this well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Juem0lcifE
- Here is the longer in depth review. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMU1RaRulSo
- This video is a shorter review of the type of chemical reactions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0187f8gqfU

- Lab 1 - Chemical Reactions: https://vimeo.com/398833082
- Goes with Lesson 8 - reviews combustion reactions and how they release energy.
- Lab 2 - Acid-Base Chemistry: https://vimeo.com/398835249
- Goes with Lesson 9
- Lab 3 - Chemical Bonding: https://vimeo.com/398837734
- Goes with Lessons 3 and 4
- Lab 4 - Properties of Materials: https://vimeo.com/398840367
- These are Grade 9 topics. Watch only if you're interested.
- Lab 5 - Solutions: https://vimeo.com/398842782
- This reviews different concentrations of solutions. Again, just for your interest, not to go with a specific topic.
